CMH honors Kent Brummell with Hutcheson Award

Citizens Memorial Hospital recognized Auxiliary volunteer Kent Brummell with the 2026 Lillian Hutcheson Award during the Auxiliary’s quarterly meeting on April 16.

Each year, the CMH Auxiliary presents the Lillian Hutcheson Award to an outstanding volunteer who demonstrates commitment, dedication and compassion to patients, residents and the organization. The award is named in honor of Lillian Hutcheson, who founded the Auxiliary program before CMH opened in 1982.

Brummell has volunteered 6,887 hours since 2017. He volunteers at the hospital information desk, as a hospital guide, picking up shredding material and as a Hospice volunteer. He is also the Auxiliary’s first vice president.

“Kent embodies everything the Lillian Hutcheson Award stands for,” said Shantelle Posten, director of volunteers. “He has shown what it truly means to lead with compassion. I am so grateful for his willingness to fill several roles as both a volunteer and a leader, and I am honored to recognize Kent with this year’s award.”

The auxiliary has 300 volunteers who donate nearly 30,000 hours annually. Volunteers support CMH in a variety of ways, from staffing information desks to hosting fundraising events. The auxiliary donated more than $107,000 to CMH in 2025 for purchases that improve the patient experience.

“We have openings for more volunteers with the CMH Auxiliary,” Posten said. “No matter your passions or talents, we have a volunteer job for you. Kent is a great example. He started out with the courtesy cart but quickly realized that wasn’t for him, so he found a job that was a better fit. Our volunteers build strong connections and find real joy in serving CMH.”
