Vein Care
WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS?
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that usually appear in the legs. While they may seem like a cosmetic issue, they can be a sign of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a condition that affects blood flow back to the heart.
What is CVI?
CVI occurs when the valves in your leg veins become weak or damaged. Blood pools in the veins instead of flowing back to the heart, causing swelling, discomfort and other health problems.
Common Symptoms
- Bulging or twisted veins.
- Leg swelling.
- Aching, heaviness or tired legs.
- Leg cramps.
- Itching or skin changes.
How is it diagnosed?
A physical exam and a simple venous reflux ultrasound can determine if you are affected by CVI.
TREATMENT OPTIONS
Early treatment can help relieve symptoms, slow the progression of CVI and reduce the risk of complications. Your surgeon will recommend the treatment that best fits your condition and symptoms.
Many people find relief with non-surgical treatment such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, avoiding smoking, elevating the legs, moisturizing the legs to protect the skin and compression socks to improve circulation.
If additional treatment is needed, your surgeon may recommend one of these procedures:
- Venous ablation.
- Vein stripping.
- Microphlebectomy.
- Sclerotherapy.
